Distracted drivers: Texting while driving may have contributed to teen girl's 'incapacitating' crash

MLIVE -- SAGINAW TWP. — On her lunch break more than two years ago, Kristi L. Fritz saw “one of the worst” and dramatic crashes she’s witnessed in her life.

A blue Chevy GMT400 pickup plowed into the passenger side of a much smaller Pontiac Sunfire driven by a 16-year-old Saginaw Township girl.

The teen, police say, was text-messaging when her car pulled into oncoming traffic less than a mile from her home.

Let me start by saying that I hope the girl makes a complete recovery and truly learns from this experience.

Having said this, I am more concerned for the innocent victims of distracted drivers.

People need to be responsible for their behavior.

Texting while driving is clearly not responsible, and people who do so and cause a crash should be held liable. The law should not ban it, it should criminalize the penalty for being involved in a crash while texting.

Sad that it takes accidents like that for us to understand how dangerous distracted driving is.

There are too many stupid people who falsely believe they can manually text while driving.

However, I do support hands free cell phone use (even if creating text messages via voice commands). To me this is the same as having a passenger in the car and conversing.

"Even with years separating that day and today, Fritz vividly recalls that crash she witnessed Aug. 20, 2009."

What is with the media and all these old, old, incidents?

Lawmakers need to make tougher sanctions or consequences regarding texting when driving. There needs to be a national law, rather than state.

It is a shame, can't people just drive when they are at the wheel?

I am sorry the crash occurred, but this is a great example of why no one shuold be texting and driving. Do one or the other, but not both.

Cell phones and vehicles are a lethal combination. It impairs driving. We need to treat cell phone usage while driving the same as driving under the influence.

Parents who get their teenagers cellphones can expect more of these types of accidents. The kids are not responsible enough to handle their phones while driving.

Of 11,861 victims of traffic crashes in Saginaw County recorded in 2010 by Michigan Traffic Facts, a data tool provided by the Office of Highway Safety Planning, 108 were caused by distracted driving and 27 tied directly to cellphone use.

You know, This has to stop. There should be steeper laws to prevent this from happening all the time. Maybe then they will learn not to even think about texting on a cellphone. There should be a device to talk only, or something to avoid this from happening again and again.

Two hands on the wheel, two eyes forward.
