The question to ask is why are we obsessed with looking for oil instead of moving beyond a limited diminishing product to alternatives?

Just how big a find will it actually be? It will take years to begin pumping and the price will have to be at least what it is now per barrel to make the effort worth while. Bring on a GOOD alternative to fossil fuels.

I'm surprised their not making significant finds in Canada. Last time i checked Canada isn't very close to the Gulf.

It appears that everybody is looking for oil in somebody else's back yard. China and Russia are looking for oil in Canada's and USA's Arctic Ocean area while Canada is looking for oil in the Southern U.S. shores. What happened to the Canadian oil sands project?

The real question to ask is why China is getting oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

aarrrt - You forget, these are global companies. The oil companies in the US aren't nationalized.

Just two of Chevron's projects. Other companies are out there, too:
Tahiti Deepwater Project, United States – The Tahiti Field is believed to be one of the Gulf of Mexico's largest deepwater discoveries, with potentially recoverable volumes of 400 million to 500 million oil-equivalent barrels. In 2008, the spar and topsides modules were installed. First oil was achieved in May 2009. Daily production is expected to ramp up to125,000 barrels of oil and 70 million cubic feet of natural gas before the end of the year. Chevron holds a 58 percent operated interest.
Blind Faith Project, United States – Blind Faith is estimated to contain more than 100 million potentially recoverable oil-equivalent barrels. It is Chevron's deepest offshore production facility, located in 6,500 feet (1,981 m) of water, with subsea wells located in 7,000 feet (2,134 m) of water. Chevron holds a 75 percent interest in and is the operator of the project. Production began in the fourth quarter of 2008. At the end of the year, the facility's total production capacity was 62,000 barrels of liquids per day and 50 million cubic feet of natural gas.

It really is a shame the US stands by while other countries take advantage of these new oil fields. Something is wrong in DC.

Every one is finding "significant" deposits everywhere. Just that all this in the Gulf of Mexico will be pumped by the Russian, Chinese, Cuban and every other group that knows how to tow a rig to take it out from under US territory, since this administration blocks any American company from getting our own oil.

pnd1 - American companies are, and they're getting incentives from the Obama administration to do it, if you had read a news story posted here a couple of days ago. Several companies are drilling in deep water in American Waters in the Gulf.

So much for the Beverly Hillbillies story where Grandpa shot a bullet into the ground and oil bubbled up.
5 kilometers is a long way to drill.

Calgary-based? Why are U.S. companies not allowed to drill in the Gulf? Russia and China are already in Cuba preparing to drill off our coasts. Why can't we do it first?

"Hard to argue that the world's supply of oil is running out. "
Do you figure "they" are making more? It's getting harder and harder to find & extract.
